As a duo, they bring a wealth of artistry as a clarinetist, flutist, saxophonist, composer, and arranger. Their craft, deeply rooted in Beninese traditions, is a flawless fusion of acoustic and contemporary sounds, delivered with a sense of purpose, and intimate and universal authenticity.
In “Je Rêve,” from the “Minlonou” album released earlier this year, the duo offers an enchanting exploration of dreams and hope. The song weaves between French and Fon(gbé), bringing an authentic cultural depth that feels familiar and adventurous. The lyrical interplay of these languages invites us into a world where personal dreams echo broader societal aspirations, making it a resonating message.
The vocals are smooth and compelling, with Landry Padonou’s delivery displaying a natural, effortless charisma. His voice is calm and purposeful, painting vivid emotional landscapes while keeping us grounded in the song’s soulful foundation. The vocal performance, one of my favorites about this song, is complemented by an understated yet powerful guitar arrangement, courtesy of his counterpart, Landry Dannon Magnidet, whose strings gently ripple through the song like waves of serenity.
