Dirty Mitts, who hail from the UK, Poland, and Egypt, were established in 2018 to create music that is unashamedly bluesy, vintage, primitive, and energetic. They are known for their ecstatic tunes and riffs that are interwoven with astonishing and profound voices and an impactful rhythm. I recently found this remarkable band through their song “My Show,” which was released on October 28th of last year. The track gave me chills, so Dirty Mitts was certainly a band to look into. So I talked to them, and I’m glad to tell you how it went. Get yourself a glass of juice and admire this interview while enjoying the music.
Songweb: Can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind your latest project?
Dirty Mitts: Ball and Chain are about a toxic relationship. It’s passionate and addictive, but the blood pumping through the main character’s veins isn’t just desired, it’s poison too. Fire can be beautiful but it bloody hurts if you get too close!
Songweb: How do you approach the creative process when creating new works of art?
Dirty Mitts: It depends on who comes up with the idea. As a band we are very open to everyone being creative, so each song takes on its journey. Sometimes we start with the lyrics, other times we start with the riff and sometimes we stumble across bits we like from our music jams.
Songweb: Can you share with us a particularly memorable moment during the making of this project?
Dirty Mitts: We recorded 7 songs in 3 days… It was pretty intense, to be honest! Drums were recorded at Cargo studios, then Guitars and Vocals at JBJ studio in Uxbridge. I sang all of the songs in 4 hours, I couldn’t feel my throat by the end!
The writing process was much nicer than this though, it was in an office in Baker Street when Mo and I (Tommy) were hanging out after work. We wanted to pay homage to our favorite band The Rolling Stones. A rather optimistic thought crossed our minds – maybe we’d be caught in some scandalous lawsuit in which the Stones would secretly try to steal our song and pass it off as their own. The searing vocals and catchy tune mean the public would never suspect a thing…
Songweb: What message or emotion do you hope to convey through your art?
Dirty Mitts: We want to bring people together as music and art are to be enjoyed by the masses. With covid locking us away for so long, it’s great to see people at our gigs enjoying the collective experience of a catchy song!
Songweb: Can you describe how you incorporate your personal experiences into your work?
Dirty Mitts: I think songwriting is a pure form of expression where you’re being straight to the point or speaking in metaphors. It’s all about telling a story and connecting with the audience but the way you do that is the real art. All work will have some truth, but I don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.
Songweb: How does your latest project differ from previous works you’ve created?
Dirty Mitts: I think we are becoming more polished with each song we create and produce. Also, our band has evolved and changed over the years with the coming and going of different members. We feel more complete this time around!
Songweb: Lastly, what are your plans for your artistic journey and where do you hope to take your work in the future?
Dirty Mitts: We want to grow our fanbase so we are playing sell-out shows and performing at festivals. Also, we’d like to be the biggest rock band ever…. Simple really!
“My Show” is a high-energy, upbeat song about the universal yearning for freedom and enjoying the present moment. The lyrics depict horses going wild and the excitement of lighting up the stage. The message of the song is especially poignant in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, as it urges audiences to accept the pleasure of live music and the communal experience it provides.
