Travis’ new song is about flashing your light amid the darkness. No matter how awful life gets, you will become stronger and brighter. He released the song in March this year. It’s about surviving huge challenges while remaining undamaged. It’s a personal song for him since he composed it when his father died of Covid 19 two years ago. In an interview with Travis, SONGWEB sheds additional insight on his life and skills. Relax and take in this interview with us.
SONGWEB: Who is Travis
TRAVIS: I am a rapper from Brooklyn NY. I have been creating music for about 20 years now.
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
Brooklyn NY born and raised. The hustle mentality of this city kind of put me in that grind mode with my music. I’m always constantly working on my craft and always moving.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My biggest influence would be my sister. She introduced me to rap at a young age because she was a rapper. I fell in love once I saw how the crowd reacted to her when she performed.
How would you describe your style of music?
I would say it’s very emotional. Very raw and intense. I call it “goosebump music”. When you listen you get goosebumps.
What inspired your new single ‘Through The Darkness’?
My dad passed away two years ago from Covid 19 and I never really had time to think about it and speak about it. That’s why I wrote this song. Speaking on it through music.
Are there challenges you face?
I’m an independent artist so there is a lot. The most challenging aspect is balancing the business side of things with the music side. I think learning to switch between those two is crucial but very hard to do when you are an artist at the core.
What can your listeners expect to see in a piece of future music produced?
More music about self-love and protecting your energy. I think the world needs more of that. Including me.
Which music icon do you draw inspiration from?
There are a few. I love Eminem’s music, Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, and Travis Scott. I get inspiration from everywhere.
What motivates you to create and the trends that inspire your work?
I truly believe I can change the world with my music so that’s what keeps me going. Knowing this whole thing is bigger than me is what keeps my pen writing.
What have critics and collectors said about your work?
I sound too different from the norm. To me, that is a good thing so it doesn’t do anything to my mindset. I was aiming for that.
Do you have an existing fan base?
I am blessed to have a big following on social media. Hard work pays off.
What are your ultimate artistic goals?
just want to change the world and have people feel good about themselves. If I can do that, that would be everything.
What are your intentions in promoting this work?
I want people to know that even at your darkest point you can still shine through. You can still be the light that burns through the darkness. It is an open message to me as well.
Describe your dream project and how we can encourage your career growth.
My dream project is to make an album with the sounds of different cultures. I want it to sound like you are traveling all around the world without leaving your world. You guys can help get the word out about it once it is released.
How do you collaborate with other artists and do you have any collaborations yet?
I collaborate with my friends who are also musicians and now I’m starting to expand that and collaborate with other artists outside my circle. Either online or through people, I have met. I have a few collaborations so far.
Describe the best piece of art you’ve created.
The best piece of art would have to be this one. It shows me. The raw me. The vulnerable me. I’m proud of that. I’m proud that I got to a level where I can open up comfortably through music. I found my home.
Do well to support music from Travis, but in the meantime, let’s show love to his current single “Through The Darkness”.
