Groove Incorporated, the dynamic collective hailing from Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), New Zealand, are dominators of a genre deeply embedded in the cultural tapestry of Aotearoa. With their fourth single, “Aotearoa Reggae,” released on November 29, the band takes us on a rhythmic journey through time, celebrating the roots, evolution, and enduring spirit of reggae music within New Zealand’s Māori and Polynesian communities. “Aotearoa Reggae” kicks off with an appealing drum roll, pulling you in with a groovy bassline that sets the heartbeat of the song. The intro feels like an intimate call to us: “We love roots reggae, Aotearoa reggae. It’s in our bones, always. It’ll never change.” This soulful prelude effortlessly brings forth the first verse, where Honey Bee’s sweet streetwise lead vocals tie up the song with warmth and authenticity. The backing vocals, delivered by Josh, Talisha, and Elena, also lay rich and uplifting harmonies that enhance the sonic depth and invoke a sense of communal celebration.

Groove Incorporated masterfully integrates reggae’s signature elements: the steady “one drop” beat, electric guitar skanks, and a grooving organ bubble that dances throughout the track. These are interwoven with lyrical nods to reggae’s pioneers, such as Herbs, Dread, and the Tribes, whose influence is acknowledged in the opening lines: “Well hello everybody, hope you’re doing OK / GI’s the name – producer DJ / Wise man in appearance from AK / But we’re young, from all over and every race.” This verse not only establishes the band’s identity but also highlights the inclusive and unifying spirit of Aotearoa reggae.

Lyrically, “Aotearoa Reggae” is a love letter to a genre that has not only provided a soundtrack for racial justice and cultural pride but also elevated New Zealand’s unique voice on the global reggae stage. Lines like “Cause when you feel the groove, you really know. That reggae music helped Te Reo live and grow” beautifully captures the transformative power of reggae in preserving the Māori language and identity.

The production, helmed by Michael Fredrickson, is a standout feature, blending crisp mixing with a reverence for reggae’s traditional roots. The instrumental breakdowns, particularly the bass-heavy dub sections, are hypnotic and perfectly tailored for festival stages. Frederickson’s attention to detail ensures that every element—be it the humming interludes or the syncopated piano skanks—feels intentional and immersive.

Groove Incorporated are cultural historians with a groove. Their music bridges eras, connecting the socio-political movements of the 1980s to today’s festival-driven scene. “Aotearoa Reggae” is a celebration and a reminder of the profound impact reggae has had in shaping New Zealand’s identity. So, whether you’re a reggae purist or a casual listener, this track will have you swaying to its rhythm and reveling in its message.
