Just a few days after I reviewed their 6-track EP titled “Pearls,” which featured moving and introspective tracks, the Nashville-based group Roxercat is back with the video for “Crime,” the second track from the “Peals” EP. “Crime,” issued as a single on January 13th, is a potent and thought-provoking track that serves as a rallying call to those who have grown weary of surrendering their autonomy to our modern society’s many systems of control. This song reflects the band’s numerous amounts of knowledge, like an enlightened energy moving at its own speed, telling a fascinating story in a wise, humorous, and lovely manner. Let me tell you all of it.
“Crime” begins with a funky guitar touch and atmospheric sounds, making Roxercat’s ferocious energy tangible from the start. The driving rhythm section then establishes a blistering tempo, enhanced by intriguing guitar riffs that cut through the mix. The lead singer, Price Jones’ raw and emotional lyrics then convey the intensity of the song’s message, imploring those listening to wake up and act. The lyrics are simple but effective, telling us that in a world saturated with information and diversions, it’s all too easy to become influenced by other people’s views and lose track of our own. The soundscape is amazing, with the guitar riffs and pace providing a lovely juxtaposition to the song’s earnestness. And Price Jones’ vocalizing is incredible, perfectly catching the song’s emotions with her unique and classy delivery.
Lyrically, “Crime” serves as a caution to listeners about the dangers of giving away our hope to systems intended to distract and affect us. It encourages us to avoid accepting what we hear or read without questioning it. The line “You just let them, You give it all way” emphasizes this. As a stark reminder of how simple it is to believe what we read or hear. The message of “Crime” is clear: if we don’t take charge of our own thoughts, we risk being ruled by others. So it’s time to reclaim our power. However, while the words are potent, it is the musical accompaniment that really hammers home the message. The musicianship of the ensemble is on full show here.
Overall, “Crime” is strong and impactful music that will give you goosebumps. Its message is more essential now than ever, as we negotiate a fast-paced, digital world where it is all too easy to fall victim to those who attempt to influence us. The production and performance of the band are truly one-of-a-kind, with all of the instruments playing in unison and the members gorgeously displaying their abilities to make the mix a flawless one. Combining components from various elements, the song has a unique tone while also telling an existing story; an excellent addition to your profound and pensive music selections. So, if you’re ready to reclaim control over your mind, beliefs, and ideas, crank up the intensity and let Roxercat lead the way.
